Unneeded new name for Chaetodon tetracanthus Lacepède 1802. •Objective synonym of Scatophagus tetracanthus (Lacepède 1802) -- (Arnoult 1986:341 [ref. 6213], Parenti 2004:2 [ref. 27605]). Current status: Synonym of Scatophagus tetracanthus (Lacepède 1802). Scatophagidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

Type catalog: Bauchot 1963:133-134, 151 [ref. 20718]. Figured on Pl. 25 (fig. 2) of Lacepède 1801 [ref. 2710], but with vernacular name. Based on drawings and manuscript of Commerson. •Valid as Scatophagus tetracanthus (Lacepède 1802) -- (Heemstra 1986:604 [ref. 5660], Arnoult 1986:341 [ref. 6213], Poll & Gosse 1995:113 [ref. 24781], Reinthal & Stiassny 1997:354 [ref. 22780], Tyler & Sorbini 1999:371 [ref. 25312], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S120 [ref. 27377], Parenti 2004:2 [ref. 27605], Fricke et al. 2018:347 [ref. 35805], Heemstra 2022:208 [ref. 40142]). Current status: Valid as Scatophagus tetracanthus (Lacepède 1802). Scatophagidae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa and Madagascar east to Papua New Guinea, south to northern Australia. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
