Schilbe Oken [L.] (ex Cuvier) 1817:1183 [Isis (Oken) v. 1 (pt 8) (no. 148); ref. 3303] Masc. Silurus mystus Linnaeus 1758. Type by monotypy. First appeared as "Les Schilbé" in Cuvier 1816:202 [ref. 993]; latinized by Oken (see Gill 1903:966 [ref. 5768]). Spelled Schilbeus, Schilbea and Schilba in early literature. Spelled Schillee by Jerdon 1849:335 [ref. 4902]. The family name appears both as Schilbeidae and Schilbidae in current literature. Ferraris 2007:356 [ref. 29155] uses Schilbidae.
