Neotype: UW 43493. Appeared as Epinephelus ciliatus Camtschaticus et Americanus. Orr & Blackburn 2004 [ref. 27661] showed that ciliatus and its presumed synonym variabilis were separate species. Neotype designated by Orr & Blackburn 2004:339 [ref. 27661]. Original type locality was bodering Kamchatka, Russia and Aleutian Is. Distribution: North Pacific: western Aleutian Islands (U.S.A.) and Bering Sea, through the Gulf of Alaska, then south to British Columbia (Canada). Habitat: marine.

variabilis, Perca Pallas [P. S.] 1814:241 [Zoographia Rosso-Asiatica v. 3; ref. 3351] North American seas. Lectotype: MNHN 0000-8670 (1, dry). Paralectotypes: ZMB 6494 (1, dry, lost) Kamchatka, 8145 (1, dry, lost) Aleutian Is. Type catalog: Blanc & Hureau 1968:25 [ref. 20738] as paratype, Bauchot & Desoutter 1987:117 [ref. 12478], Paepke & Fricke 1992:272 [ref. 19946]. Until Orr & Blackburn 2004 [ref. 27661], this species was considered a synonym of Sebastes ciliatus. Lectotype selected by Orr & Blackburn 2004:330, 340 [ref. 27661]. Type information: Svetovidov 1978:25 [ref. 6025]. •Valid as Sebastes variabilis (Pallas 1814) -- (Orr & Blackburn 2004:340 [ref. 27661], Love et al. 2005:80 [ref. 37547], Butler et al. 2012:24 [ref. 40735], Page et al. 2013:119 [ref. 32708], Parin et al. 2014:222 [ref. 33547], Kells et al. 2016:152 [ref. 35888], Love et al. 2021:112 [ref. 39279]). Current status: Valid as Sebastes variabilis (Pallas 1814). Scorpaenidae: Sebastinae. Distribution: North Pacific: Hokkaido (Japan) north to Bering Sea, then from Gulf of Alaska (U.S.A.) south to Oregon (U.S.A.) Habitat: marine.
