Appeared later as Bean in Goode & Bean 1882:426 [ref. 1840] using specimens from USNM 30795 (2). Authorship attributed to Jordan & Gilbert since their description appears to be independent of Bean. •Synonym of Stenotomus chrysops (Linnaeus 1766) -- (Castro-Aguirre et al. 1999:349 [ref. 24550]). •Valid as Stenotomus caprinus Jordan & Gilbert 1882 -- (Robins & Ray 1986:184 [ref. 23100], Boschung 1992:143 [ref. 23239], Carpenter 2003:1576 [ref. 27092], Nelson et al. 2004:146 [ref. 27807], McEachran & Fechhelm 2005:404 [ref. 28815], Page et al. 2013:150 [ref. 32708], Parenti 2019:67 [ref. 36892]). Current status: Valid as Stenotomus caprinus Jordan & Gilbert 1882. Sparidae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: North Carolina to Florida (U.S.A.); Gulf of Mexico south to Yucatan (Mexico). Habitat: marine.
