Genus Stephanolepis is feminine, so the species epithet should be spelled aurata. •Valid as Stephanolepis auratus (Castelnau 1861) -- (Hutchins 1977:57 [ref. 2283], Hutchins 1986:886 [ref. 5673], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S124 [ref. 27377], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:446 [ref. 28072], Matsuura 2014:13 [ref. 33576], Fricke et al. 2018:381 [ref. 35805], Kumar et al. 2019:[3] [ref. 36793]). •Valid as Stephanolepis aurata (Castelnau 1861) -- (Hutchins 2022:443 [ref. 40252]). Current status: Valid as Stephanolepis aurata (Castelnau 1861). Monacanthidae. Distribution: Western Indian Ocean: Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa (Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia) and Madagascar east to northwestern India. IUCN (2019): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
