Distribution: Western Atlantic: Nova Scotia (Canada) south to northern Argentina, including Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea; eastern Atlantic: Ireland and western France south to Angola, including Azores, Madeira and São Tomé and Principe. Introduced in eastern Pacific (Guatemala south to Colombia). IUCN (2019): Vulnerable. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
