samam, Engraulis Montrouzier [X.] 1857:487 [209] [Annales de la Société d'Agriculture, Histoire Naturelle et Arts Utiles de Lyon (sér. 2) v. 8 (1856); ref. 17789] Garrer Bay, New Britain, Papua New Guinea (mouth of cove surrounded by coral reef and mangrove). Neotype: BMNH 1971.2.8.49. On p. 209 of reprint. Kotttelat (2013) spells the genus as saman, with author as Montrouzier & Thiollière. Neotype selected by Hata et al. 2023:293 [ref. 40161]. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Bali (Indonesia) and Sabah (Malaysia) east to Caroline Islands (Micronesia) and Mariana Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands (Japan) and Ogasawara Islands (Japan), south to Western Australia, Queensland (Australia) at 16°30'S, and New Caledonia. Habitat: brackish, marine.
