Holotype (unique): USNM 74468. •Questionably a synonym of Triphoturus nigrescens (Brauer 1904) -- (Paxton 1979:18 [ref. 6440]). •Synonym of Triphoturus nigrescens (Brauer 1904) -- (Hulley 1986:88 [ref. 9677]). •Valid as Triphoturus microchir (Gilbert 1913) -- (Fujii in Masuda et al. 1984:71 [ref. 6441], Pequeño 1989:38 [ref. 14125] as macrochir, Nakabo 2000:387 [ref. 25086], Shinohara et al. 2005:412 [ref. 28370], Evseenko 2008:170 [ref. 32467] as cf. microchir). Current status: Valid as Triphoturus microchir (Gilbert 1913). Myctophidae: Lampanyctinae. Distribution: Northwestern Pacific: Japan. Habitat: marine.

Paralectotypes: (9) ZMB 17614-15 (1, 1). Lectotype selected by Hulley 1981 [ref. 2276] who concluded that ZMB 17614-15 were not this species. We treat micropterum as a synonym of nigrescens based on Hulley's 1986 review. •Questionably valid as Triphoturus micropterus (Brauer 1906) -- (Paxton 1979:18 [ref. 6440]). •Valid as Triphoturus micropterus (Brauer 1906) -- (Chen 2002:190 [ref. 26587]). •Synonym of Triphoturus nigrescens (Brauer 1904) -- (Hulley 1986:87 [ref. 9677], Mundy 2005:235 [ref. 28379], Paxton et al. 2006:530 [ref. 28994], Evseenko 2008:162 [ref. 32467]).
