Fowler (1917:94) selected USNM 16896 as type, perhaps not knowing that there was more than one specimen in that lot. Shufeldt listed several USNM lots and it is very confusing which he referred to his new subspecies; technically no lectotype has been named. •Synonym of Umbra pygmaea (DeKay 1842) -- (see Fowler 1917:94 [ref. 24137]).
