bilineata, Umbra pygmaea Shufeldt [R. W.] 1917:147, Fig. [Aquatic Life v. 2 (no. 11); ref. 20766] Tributary of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, U.S.A. Syntypes: USNM 16896 (orig. 4, now 3), 60797 (1, not this family), 67455 (2, now 0), 68321 (6), 72442 (larger of 2), Univ. of Chile [ex USNM 67455] (2); not 27481, 35971, or one specimen in 16896. Fowler (1917:94) selected USNM 16896 as type, perhaps not knowing that there was more than one specimen in that lot. Shufeldt listed several USNM lots and it is very confusing which he referred to his new subspecies; technically no lectotype has been named. •Synonym of Umbra pygmaea (DeKay 1842) -- (see Fowler 1917:94 [ref. 24137]). Current status: Synonym of Umbra pygmaea (DeKay 1842). Umbridae. Habitat: freshwater.

O.] 1843:296, Pl. 13 (fig. 2) [Boston Journal of Natural History v. 4 (no. 3) (art. 24); ref. 15929] Connecticut River, Connecticut; Brookhaven, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. No types known. Appeared as name only in Ayres 1842:58 [ref. 15927] and without distinguishing features in Ayres 1842:263 [ref. 15930]. •Synonym of Umbra pygmaea (DeKay 1842) -- (Smith 1986:242 [ref. 22186]). Current status: Synonym of Umbra pygmaea (DeKay 1842). Umbridae. Habitat: freshwater.

Neotype designated by Schmidt & Daniels 2006:10 [ref. 28578]. •Valid as Umbra pygmaea (DeKay 1842) -- (Lee et al. 1980:130 [ref. 22416], Smith 1986:242 [ref. 22186], Page & Burr 1991:59 [ref. 18983], Jenkins et al. in Jenkins & Burkhead 1994:247 [ref. 21581], Murdy et al. 1997:102 [ref. 23144], Crossman & Ráb 2001:860 [ref. 25475], Nelson et al. 2004:84 [ref. 27807], Schmidt & Daniels 2006:11 [ref. 28578], Scharpf 2006:22 [ref. 30386], Kottelat & Freyhof 2007:344 [ref. 29996], Page & Burr 2011:376 [ref. 31215], Page et al. 2013:87 [ref. 32708], Robins et al. 2018:175 [ref. 35886], Page et al. 2023:82 [ref. 40505]).
