Holotype (unique): BMNH 1867.11.28.322. Subjectively invalid; secondarily preoccupied by Ophisurus lumbricoides Bleeker 1853 when both are in Ophichthys, replaced by Ophichthys timorensis Günther 1870. Also appeared in Bleeker 1865:46 [ref. 408]. •Valid as Yirrkala lumbricoides (Bleeker 1864) -- (Paxton et al. 1989:121 [ref. 12442], McCosker 2007:6 [ref. 29192], McCosker 2022:135 [ref. 39686]). 2°Homonym. Current status: Valid as Yirrkala lumbricoides (Bleeker 1864). Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae. timorensis, Ophichthys Günther [A.] 1870:86 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 8; ref. 1995] Timor Island, southern Malay Archipelago. Holotype: BMNH 1867.11.28.322 [from Bleeker coll.]. Günther terms the BMNH specimen as "Type of the species, 9 inches long," so that specimen is the lectotype if other syntypes exist. Replacement name for Sphagebranchus lumbricoides Bleeker 1864, preoccupied by Ophisurus lumbricoides Bleeker 1853 when both are in Ophichthys. But based on Art. 59.3, Ophichthus lumbricoides can be mainained as the valid. name. •In the synonymy of Yirrkala lumbricoides (Bleeker 1864). Replacement Name.
