OSMYLIDAE

Spilosmylus africanus (Kolbe, 1897)

Type Depository:

Type Locality:

Geographical Distribution: Fraser (1955) cites Navás for a record of this species from Madagascar: Tamatave Prov., Perinet, 12 March 1932.

Notes:

Spilosmylus bossei (Navás, 1928)

Type Depository:

Type Locality:

Geographical Distribution:

Notes:

Spilosmylus interlineatus (McLachlan, 1870)

Type Depository:

The Locality:

Geographical Distribution: Fraser (1951) records this species from Tamatave Prov., Perinét, Sahamaloto, January 1949, P. Cachan.

Notes: Fraser (1951) provides a good illustration of this species. There is a single pustule on the anal margin and narrow transverse stripes on the forewing.

Spilosmylus malgassicus Fraser, 1951

Type Depository: unknown

Type Locality: Madagascar: Antananarivo Prov., Tananarive, Tsimbazaza Botanical Garden, R. Paulian, 1 male.

Geographical Distribution: Known only from the type.

Notes: Fraser (1951) provides an illustration of the wings which indicates no pustules along the anal margin of the forewing, but a tiny black spot in that region. There is little or no banding, except narrowly along the gradate veins.

Spilosmylus marmoratus (Fraser, 1955)

Type Depository: MNHN, Paris ?

Type Locality: Madagascar: forest to the north of Anosibe, January 1951, R. Paulian, 1 specimen.

Geographical Distribution: Known only from the type.

Notes: Fraser (1955) provides an illustration of the wings which shows very heavy pigmentation along the wings. It would be unmistakeable because of this heavy color pattern.

Spilosmylus neseaus Navás, 1940

Type Depository: MNHN, Paris

Type Locality: Comoro Islands, Fombeni, December 1932, A. Seyrig, 1 specimen (missing abdomen).

Geographical Distribution: In addition to the type, Ohm & Hölzel (1998) report this species from: Comoro Islands, SW Mamoudzou, forest at Kouale, 22-23 November, 1993, 1 male, 1 female; Forest W Vahibe, 24-25 November 1993, 5 males, 5 females; Forest W Vahibe, 17 November 1994, 6 males, 4 females.

Notes:

Spilosmylus punctulatus (Navás, 1933)

Type Depository:

Type Locality:

Geographical Distribution: Within Madagascar Navás (1936) records this species from Tamatave Prov., Perinet, February 1935, Olsoufieff (MNHN). Fraser (1955) cites Tamatave Prov., Perinet, 12 March 1932.

Notes: Fraser (1955) suggests that this species and S. pustulatus are probably only variants of each other and belong to the same species.

Spilosmylus pustulatus Navás, 1935

Type Depository: MNHN, Paris and Navás Collection, Madrid

Type Locality: Madagascar: Tamatave Prov., Perinét, December 1933, Vadon (MNHN); Perinet, December 1930 (Madrid); Fanovana (East Coast), January 1934, Olsoufieff (Madrid).

Geographical Distribution: In addition to the type, Navás (1936) records this species from Tamatave Prov., Perinét, February 1935 (MNHN).

Notes: Along with the original description Navás (1935) provides a partial illustration of the forewing. Most notable in this illustration is the presence of two pustules along the anal margin.
