Hypsophrys Agassiz [L.] 1859:408 Fem. Hypsophrys unimaculatus Agassiz 1859. Type by monotypy. The entire description of the genus and species is, "A second [genus], resembling Chrysophrys, he called Hypsophrys unimaculatus." Typically this would be regarded as not available, no distinguishing features provided (some remarks of the colouration and from Lake Nicaragua). However, Kullander & Hartel 1996:200 [ref. 22732] treat as available and valid. There were so few cichlid species described at that time, that the name is considered available. From the Greek ὀφρύς (ophrýs), eyebrow, a feminine word. •Valid as Hypsophrys Agassiz 1859 -- (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:637 [ref. 27061], Chakrabarty & Sparks 2007:60 [ref. 29184], Říĉan et al. 2008:952 [ref. 31419], Říčan et al. 2016:34 [ref. 34357]). Current status: Valid as Hypsophrys Agassiz 1859. Cichlidae: Cichlinae.
