Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa (Mozambiquem Tanzania, Kenya), Seychelles, Aldabra (Seychelles), Comoros, Madagascar, Saint Brandon's Shoals (Cargados Carajos) and western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) and Pitcairn Group, north to Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands(Japan) and Ogasawara Islands (Japan), south to northern Australia. Habitat: marine. earnshawi, Amblycirrhitus Lubbock [R.] 1978:262, Figs. 1-2 [Senckenbergiana Biologica v. 58 (nos 5/6) (1977); ref. 8916] Ascension Island, southern Atlantic, depth 0-20 meters. Holotype: BMNH 1978.1.23.1. Paratypes: BMNH 1978.1.23.2 (1), SMF 13841 (1), USNM 216675 (1). •Valid as Amblycirrhitus earnshawi Lubbock 1978 -- (Randall 1990:851 [ref. 19149], Wirtz et al. 2014:8 [ref. 33516], Rocha in Carpenter & De Angelis 2016:2688 [ref. 34618]). Current status: Valid as Amblycirrhitus earnshawi Lubbock 1978. Cirrhitidae. Distribution: Ascension Island. Habitat: marine. fasciatus, Cirrhites Cuvier [G.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1829:76, Pl. 47 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 3; ref. 4879] Puducherry, India [in error, probably Atlantic]. Replacement name for Cirrhites fasciatus Cuvier 1829, preoccupied by Cirrhites fasciatus Bennett 1828. •Valid as Amblycirrhitus indicus Fowler 1938 -- (Randall 1963:424 [ref. 3599], Fricke 1999:353 [ref. 24106]). •Synonym of Amblycirrhitus pinos (Mowbray 1927) -- (Randall 2001:870 [ref. 25452] with remarks on locality, Randall & Schultz 2008:15 [ref. 29982]).
