Neotype designation by Fricke 1999:144 [ref. 24106] is invalid; see Fricke 2000:639 [ref. 24537]. Based on multiple sources, including the 'Solenostomus cauda rotundata integerrima: seta nulla' of Gronow 1763:119 [ref. 1910], which was based on the 'Petiumbaba Brasiliensibus: Tobacco pipe-fish' of Willughby 1686: Pl. P8, fig. 1 [ref. 30164] [Brazil], the 'Acus chinensis maxima, corpore compresso' of Petiver 1702:Pl. 68, fig. 1 [ref. 30233] [China], the 'Peniop Pandjang' and 'Ikan Djoelong Djoelong' of Valentyn 1726:448, 502, figs. 323, 494 [ref. 30358] [Indonesia].
