Original localities: Cuba; Jamaica; Calcutta; China; India; North America, plus localities represented in synonymy. Lectotype: ZMB 5089. Lectoparatypes: (at least 8 at BMNH) or possible syntypes: BMNH 1846.10.13.34 (stuffed), 1848.1.12.1043-1044 (2 half skins), 1850.12.1.- (stuffed), 1860.9.13.132 (not found), 1860.9.13.133 (1), 1968.3.11.7 (half skin), 1868.3.11.8 (stuffed). Unexplained name, regarded as a new species name (and indexed as such, p. 510) for several available species names and specimens. Lectotype selected by Kottelat (2013:344). Distribution: Eastern Pacific: southern California (U.S.A.) south to Peru, including Gulf of California (Mexico), Guadalupe Island and Revillagigedo Islands (Mexico), Cocos Island (Costa Rica) and Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). IUCN (2010): Least Concern (as Lobotes pacificus).
