oplopomus, Gobius Valenciennes [A.] (ex Ehrenberg) in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1837:66 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 12; ref. 1006] Massawa, Eritrea, Red Sea. Ehrenberg specimens (possible syntypes): ?MNHN uncat. (1, whereabouts unknown), ZMB 2060-61 (3, 4). Type catalog: Bauchot et al. 1991:58 [ref. 19958], MNHN 'holotype' apparently lost. Based on description of Oplopomus pulcher in manuscript by Ehrenberg, and underlying specimens (syntypes). No explicit mentioning of a single holotype in original description [except 'un petit poisson' (a small fish), which may refer to the species rather than to a specimen], so the Ehrenberg specimens in ZMB maybe syntypes. •Valid as Oplopomus oplopomus (Valenciennes 1837) -- (Goren 1979:48 [ref. 1852], Dor 1984:248 [ref. 29757], Akihito in Masuda et al. 1984:254 [ref. 6441], Hoese 1986:796 [ref. 5670], Randall et al. 1990:405 [ref. 15987], Randall & Goren 1993:15 [ref. 21131], Goren & Dor 1994:65 [ref. 25356], Randall 1995:339 [ref. 22896], Carpenter et al. 1997:213 [ref. 23922], Kuiter 1997:350 [ref. 25488], Randall et al. 1997:405 [ref. 25919], Iwata et al. 1998:117 [ref. 23379], Suzuki et al. 1999:7 [ref. 24395], Myers 1999:243 [ref. 23965], Larson in Randall & Lim 2000:639 [ref. 25122], Nakabo 2000:1196 [ref. 25182], Laboute & Grandperrin 2000:413 [ref. 25191], Allen 2000:121 [ref. 25868], Hutchins 2001:43 [ref. 25847], Larson & Murdy 2001:3598 [ref. 26293], Nakabo 2002:1196 [ref. 26193], Allen & Adrim 2003:59 [ref. 26830], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S119 [ref. 27377], Myers & Donaldson 2003:643 [ref. 27495], Shibukawa et al. in Kimura & Matsuura 2003:187 [ref. 27510], Adrim et al. 2004:126 [ref. 27715], Heemstra et al. 2004:3329 [ref. 27945], Randall 2005:543 [ref. 28239], Hoese & Larson 2006:1668 [ref. 29097], Larson et al. 2008:150 [ref. 29532], Shao et al. 2008:262 [ref. 29952], Shibukawa 2009:281 [ref. 30449], Allen & Erdmann 2012:983 [ref. 31980], Larson et al. 2013:175 [ref. 32988], Larson et al. 2013:203 [ref. 32988], Bogorodsky et al. 2014:429 [ref. 33460], Koeda et al. 2016:93 [ref. 35333], Ali et al. 2018:337 [ref. 36183], Fricke et al. 2018:335 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:158 [ref. 36273], Eagderi et al. 2019:65 [ref. 37020], Fricke et al. 2019:287 [ref. 36673], Akaike et al. 2021:29 [ref. 38809], Parenti 2021:204 [ref. 38603], Larson 2022:117 [ref. 39971], Bogorodsky & Goren 2023:20 [ref. 40247], Sato et al. 2023:15 [ref. 40019]).
