Possible holotype: QM I.1351 (1 of 2). Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:60 [ref. 12367]. Neotype designated by Herre 1936:165 [ref. 22183] as FMNH 17340 from Vila, New Hebrides, but de Vis' possible type might be in the Queensland Museum and needs investigation; if the holotype then the case should be submitted to the ICZN. •Valid as Pseudochromis purpurascens (De Vis 1884) -- (Paxton et al. 1989:520 [ref. 12442]). •Valid as Cypho purpurascens (De Vis 1884) -- (Randall et al. 1990:124 [ref. 15987], Allen 1997:96 [ref. 23977] as purpurescens, Kuiter 1997:124 [ref. 25488], Randall et al. 1997:124 [ref. 25919], Gill 1999:2570 [ref. 24817], Laboute & Grandperrin 2000:204 [ref. 25191], Randall et al. 2004:13 [ref. 27624], Gill 2004:17 [ref. 27767], Randall 2005:186 [ref. 28239], Gill et al. 2006:1064 [ref. 29084], Fricke et al. 2011:387 [ref. 31242], Allen & Erdmann 2012:323 [ref. 31980], Yoshida et al. 2016:171 [ref. 35076]). Current status: Valid as Cypho purpurascens (De Vis 1884). Pseudochromidae: Pseudochrominae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Papua New Guinea, Great Barrier Reef (Australia), Coral Sea, Solomon Islands to New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. Habitat: marine.
