Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Persian Gulf, Socotra (Yemen), Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar and western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) east to Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), north to southern Korea and Seto Inland Sea (Japan), south to Western Australia, New Caledonia and Tonga. Iintroduced into Western Atlantic waters off Florida, U.S.A. IUCN (2019): Least concern. Habitat: brackish, marine.
