fasciatus, Squalus Hermann [J.] (ex Seba) 1783:302, table at rear [Tabula affinitatum animalium olim academico specimine edita; ref. 20759] No locality, probably Indonesia. Lectotype: whereabouts unknown. Based on Squalus varius of Seba 1759:105, Pl. 34 (fig. 1); in Latin only in table. Lectotype selected by Fricke 1999:13 [ref. 24106] as the specimen represented in Seba's 1759, Pl. 34, fig 1. Distribution: Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, South Africa, Persian Gulf, Madagascar and Mauritius (Mascarenes) east to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia) and New Caledonia. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
