Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Sri Lanka and Bangladesh east to Vanuatu and Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia. Habitat: marine.

Type catalog: Fricke 1991:11 [ref. 13474], Fricke 2005:25 [ref. 29864]. Appeared first in Bleeker 1845:520 [ref. 312] without distinguishing features; also in Bleeker 1850:105 [ref. 16888]. Fricke 2005:25 [ref. 29864] regards SMNA 10583 and RMNH 14413 as syntypes and dates to 1845. •Valid as Chaetodon oligacanthus Bleeker 1850 -- (Smith et al. 2003:304 [ref. 27125], Zuo & Tang 2011:1003 [ref. 32151], Nakae in Kimura et al. 2015:70 [ref. 34319], Nakae in Kimura et al. 2018:209 [ref. 36460]). •Synonym of Parachaetodon ocellatus (Cuvier 1831) -- (Blum 1989:15 [ref. 37553], Burgess 1978:275 [ref. 700]). Current status: Synonym of Parachaetodon ocellatus (Cuvier 1831). Chaetodontidae. Habitat: marine.
