Paralectotypes: ZMUC P6750 (dry skin). Type catalog: Nielsen 1974:72 [ref. 9588]. Authorship according to Fricke 2008:55 [ref. 30182]. Forsskål 1775 introduced the name sohal as a substitute for a possible to be named taxon, but in synonymy of Chaetodon lineatus Linnaeus 1758; name made available as Chaetodon sohar by Gmelin 1789:1268 [ref. 18139] (see Fricke 2008:55 [ref. 30182]); name sohal here retained due to prevailing usage. Spelled sohar by Lacepède 1802:556, 557 [ref. 4929]; sohab in Cuvier 1816:331 [ref. 993]. Lectotype selected by Klausewitz & Nielsen 1965:24 [ref. 20847]. One specimen recorded from Mediterranean Sea, probably an aquarium release. Habitat: marine.

W.] 1828:unnum. p., Pl. 2 [A selection from the most remarkable and interesting fishes found on the coast of Ceylon First Edition; ref. 16785] South coast of Sri Lanka. No types known. •Synonym of Acanthurus lineatus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Randall 1956:191 [ref. 12221], Pethiyagoda et al. 1994:43 [ref. 21456], Randall 2022:225 [ref. 40150]). Current status: Synonym of Acanthurus lineatus (Linnaeus 1758). Acanthuridae. Habitat: marine.
