fleurieu, Ostorhinchus Lacepède [B. G. E.] 1802:23, 24 [Histoire naturelle des poissons (Lacepède) v. 4; ref. 4929] Pacific. Type catalog: Bauchot & Desoutter 1987:97 [ref. 12478]. Figured in Lacepède 1801: Pl. 32 (fig. 2) [ref. 2710] but with vernacular name. Neotype as BPBM 15921 was designated by Gon 1987:141 [ref. 6706]; Randall et al. 1990 [ref. 14259] did not accept the neotype designation as valid, but we find no reason to reject the neotype designation: it was done in a "critical study of the nominal species-group in question" and the specimen was adequately identified as the neotype ("data and description sufficient to ensure recognition of the specimen designated"). Gon & Randall 2003:14 [ref. 26750] disagree with this interpretation and now recognize both fleurieu and aureus as valid. •Valid as Apogon fleurieu (Lacepède 1802) -- (Dor 1984:112 [ref. 29757], Goren & Dor 1994:30 [ref. 25356], Randall 1995:156 [ref. 22896], Carpenter et al. 1997:151 [ref. 23922], Fraser et al. 1999:10 [ref. 24562], Allen 1999:2606 [ref. 24812], Allen in Randall & Lim 2000:613 [ref. 25122], Sadovy & Cornish 2000:96 [ref. 25480], Allen 2000:100 [ref. 25868], Allen & Adrim 2003:35 [ref. 26830], Gon & Randall 2003:14 [ref. 26750] dated 1801, Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S106 [ref. 27377], Heemstra et al. 2004:3320 [ref. 27945], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:184 [ref. 28072], Allen et al. 2006:1088 [ref. 29004], Shibukawa 2009:105 [ref. 30449], Yoshida et al. 2013:106 [ref. 34464]). •Valid as Ostorhinchus fleurieu Lacepède 1802 -- (Allen & Erdmann 2012:392 [ref. 31980], Fricke et al. 2014:74 [ref. 33932], Mabuchi et al. 2014:200 [ref. 33426], Koh & Lim 2015:54 [ref. 39529], Psomadakis et al. 2015:210 [ref. 34104], Mabuchi et al. 2015:44 [ref. 34429], Fricke et al. 2018:172 [ref. 35805], Golani & Fricke 2018:77 [ref. 36273], Eagderi et al. 2019:38 [ref. 37020], Fricke et al. 2019:134 [ref. 36673], Kuiter & Kozawa 2019:85 [ref. 36965], Zajonz et al. 2019:74 [ref. 36871], Psomadakis et al. 2020:408 [ref. 37272], Fraser et al. 2022:198 [ref. 39752], Moazzam & Osmany 2023:60 [ref. 40689]).
