Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), north to southern Taiwan, south to northern New South Wales (Australia); waifs reaching Galápagos Archipelago (eastern Pacific). Habitat: marine.

Paratypes: MCZ 29396 (2), CAS-SU 7164 (2). •Synonym of Canthigaster bennetti (Bleeker 1854) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:488 [ref. 6714]). Current status: Synonym of Canthigaster bennetti (Bleeker 1854). Tetraodontidae. Habitat: marine.

W.] 1830:unnum. p., Pl. 21 [A selection from the most remarkable and interesting fishes found on the coast of Ceylon First Edition; ref. 16785] South coast of Sri Lanka. No types known. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Tetraodon ocellatus Linnaeus 1758. Original genus should have been spelled Tetraodon. •Synonym of Canthigaster bennetti (Bleeker 1854) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:488 [ref. 6714], Pethiyagoda et al. 1994:43-44 [ref. 21456]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Canthigaster bennetti (Bleeker 1854). Tetraodontidae. Habitat: marine.

Holotype (unique): SAIAB [formerly RUSI] 307 [ex AMG]. •Synonym of Canthigaster bennetti (Bleeker 1854) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:488 [ref. 6714], Smith & Heemstra 1986:898 [ref. 5714], Matsuura 2022:462 [ref. 40261]).
