Based on Canthigaster cinctus of McCulloch 1922:245. The species epithet axiologus stems from the Greek words αξίος and λόγος, the latter Latinised to logus; it is a noun in apposition and does not change its ending, though Canthigaster is feminine. •Synonym of Canthigaster coronata (Vaillant & Sauvage 1875) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:486 [ref. 6714]). •Valid as Canthigaster axiologus Whitley 1931 (sometimes seen as axiologa) -- (Randall et al. 2008:6 [ref. 29943], Motomura et al. 2010:237 [ref. 31256], Williams et al. 2012:84 [ref. 32264], Allen & Erdmann 2012:1091 [ref. 31980], Motomura et al. 2015:31 [ref. 34709], Matsuura et al. 2020:87 [ref. 37714], Wada et al. 2021:51 [ref. 38521]). Current status: Valid as Canthigaster axiologus Whitley 1931. Tetraodontidae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Australia est to French Polynesia, north to Amami Islands (southern Japan). Habitat: marine.

Based on Solander manuscript name and other Polynesian references and one specimen from Hawaii. Perhaps validates Solander name in synonymy and should not be attributed to Jordan & Evermann. •Synonym of Canthigaster coronata (Vaillant & Sauvage 1875) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:486 [ref. 6714], Randall et al. 1990:476 [ref. 15987], Randall 1995:405 [ref. 22896], Randall 2005:649 [ref. 28239], Mundy 2005:534 [ref. 28379], Randall 2007:490 [ref. 30952], Randall et al. 2008:4 [ref. 29943], Williams et al. 2012:87 [ref. 32264]).
