luctuosus, Homalogrystes De Vis [C. W.] 1882:369 [Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales v. 7 (pt 3); ref. 1087] Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Holotype (unique): QM I.179 (dry mount). •Synonym of Epinephelus cyanopodus (Richardson 1846) -- (Paxton et al. 1989:494 [ref. 12442], Randall & Heemstra 1991:128 [ref. 19601], Heemstra & Randall 1993:136 [ref. 21042], Parenti & Randall 2020:66 [ref. 37354]). Current status: Synonym of Epinephelus cyanopodus (Richardson 1846). Epinephelidae. Habitat: marine.

punctatissimus, Serranus Günther [A.] 1859:144 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 1; ref. 1961] China. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1983.12.22.1. Also listed was Plate X, fig. A, but on preface p. vi it is stated, "The Plates referred to, and executed by Mr. Ford, will be published as a separate volume." The figure apparently is Pl. 4A in Boulenger 1895 [ref. 537]. •Objective synonym of Epinephelus cyanopodus (Richardson 1846) after the type of punctatissimus was made the neotype of cyanopodus -- (Randall & Heemstra 1991:128 [ref. 19601], Heemstra & Randall 1993:136 [ref. 21042], Parenti & Randall 2020:66 [ref. 37354]). Current status: Synonym of Epinephelus cyanopodus (Richardson 1846). Epinephelidae. Habitat: marine.

suitonis, Epinephelus Tanaka [S.] 1915:566 [Dobutsugaku Zasshi = Zoological Magazine Tokyo v. 27 (no. 325); ref. 4324] Saiki fish market, Ooita Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. Holotype: ZUMT 13309 or 12309 (not seen in 1997). Species originally published in Japanese in above reference, later illustrated and described in more detail in English and Japanese in Tanaka 1916:402, Pl. 109 (fig. 331) [ref. 14938]. •Synonym of Epinephelus cyanopodus (Richardson 1846) -- (Randall & Heemstra 1991:128 [ref. 19601], Heemstra & Randall 1993:136 [ref. 21042], Parenti & Randall 2020:66 [ref. 37354]). Current status: Synonym of Epinephelus cyanopodus (Richardson 1846). Epinephelidae. Habitat: marine.
