Based on 'Elops, totus intense caeruleus; rostro subulato, capite et operculis branchiostegis, alepidotis' in description and illustration in manuscript by Commerson (Philibert Commerson, 1727-1773, French explorer and naturalist). Distribution: Indian Ocean: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Socotra (Yenen), Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to Andaman Sea and western Indonesia. Habitat: marine.

W.] 1828:unnum. p., Pl. 3 [A selection from the most remarkable and interesting fishes found on the coast of Ceylon First Edition; ref. 16785] Southern coast of Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean. No types known. •Synonym of Gomphosus caeruleus Lacepède 1801 -- (Pethiyagoda et al. 1994:43 [ref. 21456] as caerulius, Parenti & Randall 2000:18 [ref. 24943]). Current status: Synonym of Gomphosus caeruleus Lacepède 1801. Labridae. Habitat: marine.

ornatus, Gomphosus Anonymous [Bennett [E. T.]] 1830:690 [Memoir of the life and public services of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles; ref. 259] Sumatra, Indonesia. Holotype: ?BMNH 1855.12.26.467. On Code recommendation 51D, the anonymous author is listed in square brackets. •Synonym of Gomphosus caeruleus Lacepède 1801 -- (Parenti & Randall 2000:18 [ref. 24943]). W.] 1830:unnum. p., Pl. 30 [A selection from the most remarkable and interesting fishes found on the coast of Ceylon First Edition; ref. 16785] South coast of Sri Lanka. No types known. Apparently described independently of Gomphosus viridus Cuvier 1829; therefore it cannot be used (objectively invalid), preoccupied by Gomphosus viridis Cuvier 1829 -- (Eschmeyer & Pethiyagoda 1996:143 [ref. 22472]). •Synonym of Gomphosus caeruleus Lacepède 1801 -- (Pethiyagoda et al. 1994:43 [ref. 21456], Parenti & Randall 2000:18 [ref. 24943]). 1°Homonym.
