Syntypes: BMNH 1853.11.12.39 [Gronovius coll.] (1, skin), ZMUU Linn. coll. 195 (1). Type catalog: Wheeler 1958:228 [ref. 13434]. Lectotype selected by Fricke 1999:441 [ref. 24106] as the specimen illustrated by Gronovius 1756: Pl. 6 (fig. 2) and it might be BMNH 1853.11.12.39 which Fricke regards as unidentifiable. Based on the 'Labrus oblongus, cauda bifurca, capite purpurascente' of Gronovius 1756:26, Pl. 6 (fig. 2) (vol. 2) [ref. 20783].
