Also in Kaup 1856:85 [ref. 2573]. Probably should be regarded as an unneeded replacement name for Muraena thyrsoidea Richardson 1845, based on a Cuvier museum name, with type the Richardson specimen. Kaup's description probably possibly based on MNHN A.8810 from Pondicherry, which Böhlke & Smith 2002:94 [ref. 26380] regard as the tentative holotype of arenata. •Objective synonym of Siderea thyrsoidea Richardson 1845 -- (Böhlke 1995:463 [ref. 21738]). •Synonym of Gymnothorax thyrsoideus (Richardson 1845) -- (Böhlke & Smith 2002:94 [ref. 26380] as thysoidea and thysoideus, Smith 2012:28 [ref. 32155]). Replacement Name. Current status: Synonym of Gymnothorax thyrsoideus (Richardson 1845). Muraenidae: Muraeninae. Habitat: marine.

Type catalog: Böhlke & Smith 2002:151 [ref. 26380]. Available from plate as thyrsoides; the holotype is the specimen represented in the plate (whereabouts unknown). Species appeared (later) in text as Muraena thyrsoidea Richardson 1845:111 [ref. 20275] which is a different species (see Böhlke 1995:463 [ref. 21738]). •Valid as Gymnothorax thyrsoideus (Richardson 1845) -- (Mohsin & Ambak 1996:167 [ref. 27969]). •Nomen oblitum -- (Böhlke & Smith 2002:151 [ref. 26380]).
