Current status: Valid as Malacanthus latovittatus (Lacepède 1801). Malacanthidae. Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Socotra (Yemen), Seychelles, Aldabra (Seychelles), Mozambique Channel, Madagascar and western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.), Samoa and Tonga, north to Amami Islands (southern Japan), south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia), and New Caledonia. latovittatus, Taenianotus Lacepède [B. G. E.] 1802:303, 304, not Pl. 3 (fig. 2) [Histoire naturelle des poissons (Lacepède) v. 4; ref. 4929] Mauritius, Mascarenes, southwestern Indian Ocean. No types known. The description can be referred to Malacanthus latovittatus (Lacepède 1801), but the plate represents a scorpaenoid (see Apistus taeniatus Cuvier 1829 and Bauchot & Desoutter 1989:35 [ref. 15502]). Neotype designation by Fricke 1999:240 [ref. 24106] is invalid; see Fricke 2000:639 [ref. 24537]. The description is regarded as independent from Labrus latovittatus Lacepède 1801, but both represent the same species, Malacanthus latovittatus, so Taenianotus latovittatus is secondarily preoccupied. •The description and plate represent different families. 2°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Malacanthus latovittatus (Lacepède 1801). Malacanthidae. Habitat: marine.

Current status: Synonym of Malacanthus latovittatus (Lacepède 1801). Malacanthidae. Habitat: marine.
