Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa (Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti), Socotra (Yemen), Seychelles, Aldabra (Seychelles), Comoros, Madagascar, Saint Brandon's Shoals (Cargados Carajos) and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to Hawaiian Islands (U.S.A.) and Pitcairn Group, north to Kagoshima Prefecture (southern Japan), south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia), New South Wales (Australia), Lord Howe Island (Australia) and Austral Islands (French Polynesia). Habitat: marine.

lentiginosa, Perca Walbaum [J. J.] 1792:353 [Petri Artedi sueci genera piscium Part 3; ref. 4572] No locality stated. A forgotten name, but treated as a nomen oblitum to permit continued use of forsteri as a nomen protectum (see Parenti 2003:495 [ref. 27322]). •Synonym of Paracirrhites forsteri (Schneider 1801) -- (Parenti 2003:494 [ref. 27322]) Nomen Oblitum. Current status: Synonym of Paracirrhites forsteri (Schneider 1801). Cirrhitidae. Habitat: marine.

Type catalog: Bauchot & Daget 1972:90 [ref. 20898], Bauchot & Desoutter 1989:30-31, 39 [ref. 15502]. Based on Commerson manuscript and figure; Commerson specimen MNHN A.5445 was not seen by Lacepède and incorrectly was not therefore regarded as the type; if it is the specimen on which the manuscript and/or figure is based then it is a type. •Synonym of Paracirrhites forsteri (Schneider 1801) -- (Randall 1963:403 [ref. 3599], Fricke 1999:356 [ref. 24106], Parenti 2003:495 [ref. 27322]). Current status: Synonym of Paracirrhites forsteri (Schneider 1801). Cirrhitidae. Habitat: marine.
