Xenisma Jordan [D. S.] in Jordan & Copeland 1877:142 [Bulletin of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences v. 3 (no. 4); ref. 5961] Neut. Poecilia catenata Storer 1846. Type by monotypy. Proposed as a genus "or perhaps the sub-genus of Fundulus", with two species (X. stellifera Jordan MS and catenata Storer); description in footnote (p. 142) regarded as applying to genus and not to species F. stelliferus. Species stellifera dates to Jordan 1877:322 [ref. 2373].
