Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, East Africa, Socotra (Yemen), Madagascar, Seychelles and western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius) east to Wake Atoll and Oeno (Pitcairn Group), north to central Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia), Sydney (New South Wales, Australia), New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Habitat: marine. sakurai, Vireosa Schmidt [P. Yu.] 1931:113, Pl. 6 (fig. 2) [Transactions of the Pacific Committee of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. v. 1; ref. 3937] Itoman, Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Holotype (unique): ZIN 23381.
