Distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Persian Gulf, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Mascarenes (Mauritius), Maldives and Chagos Archipelago east to Gambier Islands, north to southern Japan and Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia. Red Sea and Indian Ocean as the subspecies flavescens, but misidentified, subspecies is still undescribed [ref. 34402; R. Fricke, pers. comm., 11/18]. Habitat: marine.

Objectively invalid; preoccupied in Chaetodon by Chaetodon diacanthus Boddaert 1772. Based in part on Chaetodon boddaerti Gmelin. •Synonym of Pygoplites diacanthus (Boddaert 1772). 1°Homonym. Holotype purchased in 1855 from Zoological Society London. •Synonym of Pygoplites diacanthus, but a valid subspecies flavescens (Bennett 1831) -- (Coleman et al. 2016:243 [ref. 34402]). •Valid as Pygoplites flavescens (Bennett 1831) -- (Golani & Fricke 2018:112 [ref. 36273], Eagderi et al. 2019:94 [ref. 37020]). •Synonym of Chaetodon kleinii Bloch 1790 -- (Burgess 1978:699 [ref. 700], Allen 1980:158 [ref. 22764], Fricke 1999:330 [ref. 24106], R.
