Based on 'Muraena unicolor: maxilla superiore longiore ...' of Gronow 1763:39 [ref. 1910]. Also described as Muraena microphthalma Walbaum 1792. Not used as valid after 1899; therefore reversal of priority in favor of Symbranchus afer Boulenger 1909 is followed (Art. 23.9). •In the synonymy of Ophisternon afrum (Boulenger 1909). Current status: Synonym of Ophisternon afrum (Boulenger 1909). Synbranchidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.

Based on 'Muraena unicolor: maxilla superiore longiore ...' of Gronow 1763:39 [ref. 1910]. Description independent of Muraena cinerea Bonnaterre 1788. Not used as valid after 1899; therefore reversal of priority in favor of Symbranchus afer Boulenger 1909 is followed (Art. 23.9). •Possibly a synonym of Ophisternon afrum (Boulenger 1909) -- (P. Parenti, pers. comm.). Current status: Uncertain as Ophisternon afrum (Boulenger 1909). Synbranchidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
