R.] 1991:52, Fig. 11 [Revue française d'Aquariologie Herpétologie v. 18 (no. 2); ref. 19718] Uva Island, Gulf of Chiriqui, (Pacific) Panama, about 7°48'N, 81°45'W, depth 12 meters. Holotype: USNM 316793. Not the same as Opistognathus panamensis Fowler 1944. •Valid as Opistognathus panamaensis Allen & Robertson 1991 -- (Allen & Robertson 1994:214 [ref. 22193], Thomson et al. 2000:193 [ref. 25640], Bussing & Lavenberg 2003:529 [ref. 27787], Fourrière et al. 2016:Suppl. p. 8 [ref. 42488], Vela-Espinosa et al. 2023:8 [ref. 40981], Fricke et al. 2024:384 [ref. 41622], Schmitter-Soto et al. 2025:suppl. Tab. 1, p. 29 [ref. 42574]). Current status: Valid as Opistognathus panamaensis Allen & Robertson 1991. Opistognathidae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California (Mexico) south to Colombia, including Cocos Island (Costa Rica) and Malpelo Island (Colombia). IUCN (2010): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
