Current status: Synonym of Pseudetroplus maculatus (Bloch 1795). Cichlidae: Etroplinae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.

Paralectotypes: ZMB 33118 [ex ZMB 2783] (2). Type catalog: Paepke 1999:62-63 [ref. 24282]. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Chaetodon maculatus Scopoli 1788, which is an unused senior synonym of Plectorhinchus picus (Cuvier 1830) [Haemulidae] -- P. Parenti, pers comm. 7/02. Chaetodon maculatus Scopoli 1788 was not used as valid after 1899; therefore reversal of precedence in favor of Chaetodon maculatus Boch 1795 (Art. 23.9) is followed.
