Paratypes: USNM 157765-66 (1, 2). •Synonym of Merluccius australis (Hutton 1872) -- (Inada in Cohen et al. 1990:332 [ref. 18936], Cousseau & Perrotta 2000:76 [ref. 25942]). •Synonym of Merluccius australis (Hutton 1872), but a valid subspecies polylepis Ginsburg 1954 -- (Lloris et al. 2003:22 [ref. 27698], Matallanas & Lloris 2006:197 [ref. 28491]). •Valid as Merluccius polylepis Ginsburg 1954 -- (Grant & Leslie 2001:700 [ref. 25592]). Current status: Valid as Merluccius polylepis Ginsburg 1954. Merlucciidae. Distribution: New Zealand, Patagonia, Chile and Argentina. Habitat: marine.
