capensis, Xiphiurus Smith [A.] 1847:no pagination, Pl. 31 [Illustrations of the zoology of South Africa v. 4; ref. 4035] Near entrance to Table Bay, South Africa, southeastern Atlantic. Holotype: BMNH 1848.6.12.5 (stuffed). Variety (potential paratype): BMNH 1848.6.12.6 (1, stuffed). Based on a typical specimen, here considered holotype. •Valid as Genypterus capensis (Smith 1847) -- (Nielsen & Cohen 1986:347 [ref. 5700], Nielsen 1990:569 [ref. 16246], Bianchi & Carpenter in Bianchi et al. 1993:144 [ref. 25472], Robins in Nielsen et al. 1999:29, 31 [ref. 24448], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:119 [ref. 28072], Russell & van Oijen 2021:433 [ref. 38177], Nielsen & Uiblein 2022:247 [ref. 39706]). Current status: Valid as Genypterus capensis (Smith 1847). Ophidiidae: Ophidiinae. Distribution: Southeastern Atlantic, southwestern Indian Ocean: Walvis Bay (Namibia) south to Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), then to Algoa Bay (Eastern Cape, South Africa). Habitat: marine.
