See Mecklenburg et al. 2002:334 [ref. 25968]. •This name is preoccupied by Gasterosteus occidentalis Linnaeus 1758 and should not be used. •Synonym of Pungitius pungitius (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Monod 1973:284 [ref. 7193], Smith 1986:278 [ref. 22186]). •Synonym of Pungitius pungitius (Linnaeus 1758), but a valid subspecies -- (Keivany & Nelson 2000:118 [ref. 24720], Krueger in Collette & Klein-MacPhee 2002:319 [ref. 26158], Scharpf 2007:35 [ref. 30398], Denys et al. 2022:399 [ref. 40085]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Pungitius pungitius (Linnaeus 1758). Gasterosteidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish.
