Lectotype: USNM 27445. Paralectotypes: CAS-SU 627 (1). Type catalog: Collette & Knapp 1967:31-32 [ref. 20211]. On p. 80 of separate. Replacement name for Nanostoma elegans Hay 1881, preoccupied by Boleichthys elegans Girard 1859 when both are in Etheostoma; same types as elegans Hay. Lectotype established by Jordan & Evermann 1896:1075 [ref. 2443] for elegans. •Synonym of Etheostoma zonale (Cope 1868), but a valid subspecies -- (Page 1983:73 [ref. 22189]). •Valid as Etheostoma lynceum Hay 1885 -- (Etnier & Starnes 1986:832 [ref. 22455], Page & Burr 1991:298 [ref. 18983], Boschung 1992:119 [ref. 23239], Etnier & Starnes 1993:502 [ref. 22809], Warren et al. 1994:133 [ref. 25557], Knight & Hastings 1994:150 [ref. 25560], Mettee et al. 1996:645 [ref. 25836], Ross et al. 2001:475 [ref. 25978], Nelson et al. 2004:134 [ref. 27807], Boschung & Mayden 2004:543 [ref. 27995], Scharpf 2008:28 [ref. 30399], Page & Burr 2011:550 [ref. 31215], Stephens et al. 2014:544 [ref. 33552]).
