Regarded as preoccupied by Gobius melanuros Gmelin 1789 [emended by authors to melanurus], replaced by Hemigobius bleekeri Koumans 1953 but Kottelat 2013:410 [ref. 32989] says this is incorrect. Lectotype selected by Larson 1999:25 [ref. 24498] but this specimen is too large. •Synonym of Hemigobius mingi (Herre 1936) -- (Larson 1999:34 [ref. 24498], Larson 2001:74 [ref. 25522]). •Valid as Hemigobius melanurus (Bleeker 1849) -- (Larson in Randall & Lim 2000:638 [ref. 25122], Kottelat 2013:411 [ref. 32989], Taki et al. 2021:460 [ref. 39830]).
