desfontainii, Sparus Lacepède [B. G. E.] 1802:54, 160 [Histoire naturelle des poissons (Lacepède) v. 4; ref. 4929] Tunisia. Holotype (unique): lost. Spelled desfontainii on p. 54, desfontaines on p. 160. Spelled Astatotilapis desfontainesi by Pellegrin 1904 and Tilapia desfontainesi Boulenger 1899 (both unjustified emendations). The first reviser to mention both spellings and attribute them to Lacepède 1802 in ref. 4929 apparently is Eschmeyer 1998:473, establishing the spelling desfontainii as the correct original spelling (T. Musschoot and N. Bailey, pers. comm. 4/26/2011). •Valid as Haplochromis desfontainii (Lacepède 1802) -- (van Oijen et al. 1991:120 [ref. 20956], Eschmeyer 1998:243 [23416], Schraml & Tichy 2010:91 [ref. 30895], Freyhof et al. 2020:5 [ref. 37614]). •Valid as Astatotilapia desfontainii (Lacepède 1802) -- (Lévêque 1990:43 [ref. 19786] as desfontainesi). Current status: Valid as Astatotilapia desfontainii (Lacepède 1802). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: North Africa: Algeria and Tunisia. Habitat: freshwater.
