Based on four figures of New Zealand fishes in the Banksian Library; names on plates variously as Sciaena mulloides sapidissimus, Mulloides sapidissimus, and other inscriptions. See Whitley 1929:122 [ref. 4665]. Regarded as unavailable -- not recognized as valid when proposed, tentatively referred by Richardson to Centropristes truttaceus Cuvier 1829. Original genus should have been Centropristis. •Questionably in the synonymy of Arripis trutta (Forster 1801) -- (Paulin 1993:462 [ref. 20997]).
