annectens, Lepidosiren Owen [R.] 1839:27, 32 [Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London 1839 [v. 1]; ref. 3322] Gambia River, western Africa. Holotype (unique): RCSE uncat. (not found). Detailed description with figures appeared in Owen 1840 [ref. 18504]. It is uncertain whether the holotype is/was deposited at RCSE or RCSHC. •Valid as Protopterus annectens (Owen 1839) -- (Herrera 1896:76 [ref. 39336], Gosse 1984:8, 10 [ref. 6169], Lévêque et al. 1989:113 [ref. 26480], Paugy & Bénech 1989:298 [ref. 26478], Lévêque in Lévêque et al. 1990:76 [ref. 21589], Skelton 1993:90 [ref. 24071], Poll & Gosse 1995:77 [ref. 24781], Seegers 1996:57 [ref. 23725], Seegers et al. 2003:28 [ref. 28087] as aff. annectens, Dankwa et al. 1999:11 [ref. 28023], Snoeks 2004:20 [ref. 28111], Marshall 2011:38 [ref. 31755] with 2 subspecies). Current status: Valid as Protopterus annectens (Owen 1839). Protopteridae. Distribution: Africa: Senegal to southern Sudan (subspecies annectens) and midde Zambian Congo and Zambezi system (subspecies brieni). Habitat: freshwater.
