Paratypes: SMF 1142 (1), 5029 (1). •Synonym of Gomphosus caeruleus Lacepède 1801, but a valid subspecies klunzingeri as described -- (Dor 1984:201 [ref. 29757], Goren & Dor 1994:54 [ref. 25356], Randall 1995:277 [ref. 22896], DiBattista et al. 2015:21 [ref. 35706], Bogorodsky & Randall 2018:[5] 243 [ref. 36492], Parenti & Randall 2018:23 [ref. 35964], Randall & Victor 2022:199 [ref. 39916]). •Synonym of Gomphosus caeruleus Lacepède 1801 -- (Parenti & Randall 2000:18 [ref. 24943]). •Valid as Gomphosus klunzingeri Klausewitz 1962 -- (Kuiter 2010:210 [ref. 35285], Golani & Fricke 2018:124 [ref. 36273]). Current status: Valid as Gomphosus klunzingeri Klausewitz 1962. Labridae. Distribution: Red Sea; northwestern Indian Ocean: Gulf of Aden. Habitat: marine.
