Neotype designated by Hata et al. 2021:10 [ref. 38161]. •Synonym of Stolephorus indicus (van Hasselt 1823) -- (Whitehead et al. 1988:412 [ref. 5725], Kottelat 2013:55 [ref. 32989]). •Valid as Stolephorus balinensis (Bleeker 1849) -- (Hata in Motomura et al. 2021:11 [ref. 38121], Hata et al. 2021:[7] [ref. 38161], Hata & Motomura 2021:11 [ref. 38794], Hata et al. 2023:199 [ref. 40153], Hata & Motomura 2023:378 [ref. 40288]). Current status: Valid as Stolephorus balinensis (Bleeker 1849). Engraulidae: Engraulinae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Gulf of Thailand and eastern Malaya (Malaysia) east to Taiwan and Papua New Guinea, north to southern Japan. Habitat: marine.
