smithi, Rhinichthys cataractae Nichols [J. T.] 1916:69 [Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History v. 35 (art. 8); ref. 15059] Hot Spring at Cave and Basin, Banff, Alberta, Canada. Holotype: AMNH 5514. Paratypes: (29) AMNH 17368 (27, 2 missing in 1996). Type catalog: Gilbert 1998:148 [ref. 23395]. •Synonym of Rhinichthys cataractae (Valenciennes 1842), but a valid subspecies but extinct -- (Renaud & McAllister 1988 [ref. 19103], McAllister 1990:65 [ref. 14674], Gilbert 1998:148 [ref. 23395], Scharpf 2005:38 [ref. 28940]). Current status: Synonym of Rhinichthys cataractae (Valenciennes 1842). Leuciscidae: Pogonichthyinae. Distribution: Alberta, Canada [subspecies smithi, now extinct]. Habitat: freshwater.
