Syntypes: NMW 69264 (4). Species later described in more detail in Steindachner 1882:78 [p. 18 in separate] [ref. 4233]. •Valid as Characidium purpuratum Steindachner 1882 -- (Ovchynnyk 1967:32 [ref. 37559], Buckup 1992:1068 [ref. 20321], Buckup 1993:102 [ref. 20831], Buckup in Reis et al. 2003:90 [ref. 27061], Lujan et al. 2013:456 [ref. 32922], Barriga Salazar 2014:106 [ref. 35745], Sarmiento et al. 2014:185 [ref. 35004], Agudelo-Zamora et al. 2020:262 [ref. 37476], Meza-Vargas et al. 2021:20 [ref. 39298]). Current status: Valid as Characidium purpuratum Steindachner 1882. Crenuchidae: Characidiinae. Distribution: South America: Andean tributaries to margin of upper Amazon River (Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru). Habitat: freshwater.
