Spelled aphia by Bonnaterre 1788:196 [ref. 4940] and authors. Neotype designated by Fricke 1999:25 [ref. 24101], but withdrawn in Fricke 2000:639 [ref. 24537]. Neotype validly designated by Kottelat 2007:155 [ref. 29201]; the neotype is the same as the neotype for Cyprinus phoxinus Linnaeus 1758 making them simultaneous objective synonyms.
