dowei, Anableps Gill [T. N.] 1861:4 [Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia v. 13; ref. 17543] El Salvador. Holotype (unique): USNM 6048. Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:18 [ref. 13621], Smith 2018:68 [ref. 36061]. Originally as dowei which appears to be intentional and not an inadvertent error. Named after Captain John M. Dow, so probably dowii was meant, possibly corrected by the printer or typesetter (Huber 2019:10 [ref. 36941]). In nineteenth century contemporary papers spelled dowii. Species name also seen as dowi or dovii. lANSP 6982 and USNM 8005 (3) are not types. Likely the holotype is the remaining specimen in USNM 6048 (D. G. Smith, pers. comm. 7/22/2011) •Valid as Anableps dowii Gill 1861 (also seen as dowei or dowi) -- (Parenti 1981:501 [ref. 7066], Villa 1982:143 [ref. 36708], Espinosa Pérez et al. 1993:44 [ref. 22290], Ghedotti 2000:38 [ref. 27228], Ghedotti in Reis et al. 2003:583 [ref. 27061], Nelson et al. 2004:103 [ref. 27807], Miller 2006:209 [ref. 28615], Matamoros et al. 2009:15 [ref. 31241], McMahan et al. 2013:447 [ref. 32422], Page et al. 2013:108 [ref. 32708], Romero-Berny et al. 2018:90 [ref. 35859], González-Murcia et al. 2019:296 [ref. 36544], Huber 2019:10 [ref. 36941]). Current status: Valid as Anableps dowii Gill 1861. Anablepidae: Anablepinae. Distribution: Pacific slope of Central America: Mexico to Nicaragua: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
